The deepest canyon in the Middle East and the second deepest in the world after Arizona’s Grand Canyon, Wadi Ghul in Oman is a spectacular site with its rock formations and layers. From Jebel Shams, the top of the mountain at 3000m, to the flat area below, you can see one kilometer straight down into the canyon, making the view absolutely stunning. The journey to the top is preceded by visits to some remote mountain villages and untamed and rugged countryside, a pristine world interrupted here and there by tiny settlements.
• A visit to the village of Birkat Al Mauz, home to many birds and dense date and banana plantations
• A visit to the 400-year old town of Al Hamra, in the interiors of Oman, characterized by mud houses, preserved from old times
• A drive to the mountain village of Misfat Al Abriyyin, where the Falaj (traditional irrigation channels) wind their way through the area
• A visit to Jebel Shams at 3000m, the top of the mountain, with excellent views of the canyon
